I had to post this one because it hit me too hard. I cried.

Conjure Man
Well, I continued writing even though I finished my 50,000 word book. I am letting that one rest while I work on my other ones. I started Conjure Man a year before I became ill with Wegener's Granulomatosis. I stopped at about 10,000 words. I am back on the case. Starting again. I should have the first draft by the end of December.
This story is based in the deserts of southern Utah and northern Arizona. I have lived many years in Utah before I joined the Navy. I had a Navajo foster sister when I was growing up in Utah. (about 1969-1970). It was at the end of the era when children from the reservations were sent to other foster homes for a better education. Bertha was not being raised by her mother or father. It was a strange situation. Her step father (she called him father) was a tribal policeman on the Navajo reservation. He sent her away because he saw a lot of the problems that many of the young adults had on the reservation. He hoped that she could live a better life.
Bertha used to tell us stories about Squaw Dances, and Skinwalkers. She used to try to teach us Navajo words. She missed her home very much. One time when she lived with us, one of her friends sent her peyote. At the time, it cost a lot to have a phone. But, my parents called her stepdad to tell him the news. She wanted to go home.
He told her that no. She would not ... He had been afraid that she was involved in a peyote church. She had turned 14 and was already talking about sex and drugs. After the summer that she stayed with us, she was sent to another family in Salt Lake City. She stayed with them one year. That was the last time I saw her.
Many years later, she came to visit my parents. She made Kachina dolls (Bertha was half-Hopi). She gave my mother the dolls in appreciation for the help that we had given her as a young girl.
Her part in my life added mystery. Maybe someday I will meet her again.

More Nanowrimo

Comic strip is from Will Write for Chocolate.
I have won the 2007 Nanowrimo contest. Now I am getting ready to finish my "Conjure Man." And then, I promise to work on my edits for my first novel. By December, I will have had three first-drafts. It is the best I have done so far. And, I did about 80% of a technical manual. It has been the most productive writing year ever.
For my personal life, I went into remission in July (or thereabouts). I have stayed in remission even though I have been on medication. I still deal with GERD and high blood pressure.
I wish that all your dreams come true. And I am excited about what this new year will bring into my life (and yours).

Happy Thanksgiving

You can find more Thanksgiving jokes here.
As for the hubby and I, we have pardoned the turkey and will be roasting a ham this year. We will roast a concoction of vegetables (yams, potatoes, carrots, etc) in a pan. We will have dressing. If we decide to have something sweet, then we will wander through Carson City looking for ice cream or a pie. I do have some chocolate ice cream in the fridge.
So I think we have all Thanksgiving food groups covered.

Sunday Scribblings: I Carry
I carry one stone, three quarters, a cellphone, and a small wedge of candle. On my neck I wear a Medic-Alert necklace.
When I go anywhere, I place this necklace carefully on my neck (I can't where it all the time because it stains my skin green). I put my pills in a pillbox and either put them in my pocket or my purse.
The one stone, three quarters, cellphone, and candle where not consciously put in my pocket. The cellphone is my emergency phone. If I am in an accident of if I have an emergency due to my sickness, I can call my husband if I am mobile or the emergency folks can see that I have emergency numbers.
It is very necessary for me that EMTs know that I am on imuran and prednisone. It is very necessary for them to know that I have Wegener's Granulomatosis, renal hypertehsion, and am allergic to penicillian. They need to know that I can die under certain circumstances. If I cannot tell them, I hope that they will look for some clues. I wear the necklace. I carry a card in my purse. I also carry a medical card in my pocketbook. I hope to have it covered.
I have heard the stories of really ill folks who have not been prepared for emergencies. They have been taken to the hospital. They have been given drugs that either interefered with other medications and/or something they were allergic too. Sometimes the story says that family were able to save these folks by telling the doctrs. Other times the story says that these very ill folks died.
So I carry it. The rock I carry is a worry stone. I found it in Japan several years ago. It feels right in my hand. When I think of not being able to save myself. I rub this rock in my hand. It feels good. I feel better.
The quarters are for a coke. I let myself have one per week. I can't have a diet coke. The aspertame is very bad for me and can interfere with my medication. So I am happy that once a week I can drink something bad for me and be Ok.
The candle? I have no idea. I think I will put it in the garbage. It is small, white, and already burned. It reminds me of the prayer candles I used to see in German Catholic cathedrals. I have friends who pray for me. I thank them. So the candle reminds me that I cannot survive without my family and my friends.
I keep the candle.

Systemic small sized vessel vasculitis after massive antigen inhalation
We and others have proposed that desensitisation, vaccination, or inhalation of antigens by asthmatic patients may trigger Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS).1-4 Few observations of vasculitis occurring immediately after massive inhalation of a presumed antigen have been published.2 We describe here four patients who experienced acute onset of systemic vasculitis after massive antigen inhalation.
Case 1: Several hours after massively inhaling dark diesel fumes, a 55 year old man developed rapid onset dyspnoea, sinusitis, and high fever, which regressed with short term steroid treatment. After three months he complained of bilateral foot drop, which was found to be due to mononeuritis multiplex in the left peroneal nerve upon clinical examination. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate was 72 mm/1st h, white blood cell count was 16.12×109/l,3 with 1870 eosinophils, serum creatinine 170 µmol/l; proteinuria 0.7 g/day, and microscopic haematuria. Specific anti-myeloperoxidase perinuclear labelling antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) were detected (30 IU).
You can find the full text at this link.
My Analysis: We have a female patient on the WG discussion group who experienced these same symptoms when she inhaled dirt and fungus from the vent system (possibly asbestos, too). She worked in a school. The principal felt that the school district could save a lot of money if the vents were cleaned out by untrained workers. In the process, (she was a special ed teacher) the patient and her students inhaled a full dose of toxic fumes and substances through the vents.
It wasn't too long that she began to have many of the same symptoms from the case history. She was diagnosed with WG, but not before she had been told by some of her doctors that she was a hypochondriac. I want to mention here, that many WG patients have the same story. Many first diagnosis for these patients was of mental illness rather than physical illness. It is a very scary.
Luckily for this patient, she was able to prove that her disease was specifically caused by this action of the school (and principal.) Many of us cannot prove what caused our disease. In fact, because we cannot prove who or what, we cannot hold that person or entity liable... and treating this disease and staying healthy is a constant process. Also very expensive.
If you would like to help us, please contact the Vasculitis Foundation. I have a link at the right of this blog under Vasculitis. We have found from talking to other WG patients with the disease that when WG is present in the family, there are also other autoimmune diseases present also. For instance, Rheumatoid Arthritis is usually found with WG. In my case, my aunt has Addison's disease. Also, there is asthma in several members of my family.
We think that WG and other vasculitis diseases are more widespread than is commonly known.

Nanowrimo Day 12
I am at the dragging portion of the manuscript. I have to think a little while and then I come up with a scene. The scenes are not coming fast and furiously as they did in the beginning.
Anyway, I have written 30,042 words. It feels like a good chunk of writing. I am pleased.

Nanowrimo Day 9
Today is a huge milestone in my Nanowrimo writing. I have 25,200 words and I am half through. Yes, fifty percent of my novel is done.
My mixed cast of characters are still trying to run from Odin although Erika is beginning to see that Loki might be a problem as well. Not only do I have a couple of Norse gods running havoc in the story, but I now have a few Native American deities. Well it is the U.S. after all. We are a mix of everything.
So I am getting lunch and then doing other things for a break. I will start again tomorrow.
I feel like I am on a horse and the horse has the bridle between its teeth. It is exhilarating.

Nanowrimo Day 8
It has been a good stretch today. I am now at 21,159 words. I should be about halfway tomorrow.
Erika escaped Odin once, but now she is in the desert with Martin. Why is it that much of my writings take place in the desert? It is something that I will have to think about. Of course, I do have a ghost story in Japan, but it is a short story.
Well, I am feeling a little light-headed. Time to quit for the day. :-)

Phoenix and Ashes
By Mercedes Lackey
ISBN: 0-7564-0272-7
Once again, Lackey has written a good book. This book is part of her Elemental Mage series. Eleanor Robinson's life is shattered when her father volunteers for the Great War (WWI) and dies in the trenches. She is left in the hands of her step-mother. Yes, the plot is Cinderella with a modern twist.
Since I really enjoy history, I was pleased with the setting (WWI setting) and how the story fit so well in the setting.
In my opinion, this book deserves 4.5 stars.

Nanowrimo Day 5
It was a slower day today. I think it is because I was tired, etc., so on and so forth. :-)
But I am now at 13,407 words. I think tomorrow will be the day that I will started chugging forward again. Maybe I will make up for the words I didn't do today. Or I will continue through the fog.

Nanowrimo Day 4
Yesterday, I finished with 12197 words on Erika T. Red. It has been quite an interesting four days. All my life, I thought, that writers should go through pain and agony when they birthed new ideas (poems, novels, etc.). Well, I have found out that it isn't so. It can also be fun.
I talk over some of my ideas with my hubby. He is a good sounding board. Then I start a new scene. So far I have been able to go through this story easily. I am sure it may get a little harder when I hit some plot problems, but so far I have started into Act II and it is all good.
Did I mention that I was havign fun? Yes, I am.

Nanowrimo Day 3
Once again my word count is better than I thought it would be. I am at 9965 today. I will be doing the transition from Act I to Act II. I hope to convince my strawberry blonde character that she must run.
It might take Loki, raven, and wolf to get the seriousness of this situation into her muddle-head. My girl is modern, cell-phone, living at home, and if she could she would still live in her parents house even after marriage.
Wow... she will be hard to dig out. Maybe I will need a hand grenade or two. LOL

Capella University Career Opportunities
I have a real fondness for good education. My family lived in the sticks. We were homeschooled. I have to admit that I really wanted to go to a regular school and associate with what I thought of as regular people.
When I finally went to college, I found because I had to learn how to research and learn for myself that I was more prepared for college than other students. I didn't expect to have the knowledge given to me. I searched for it.
Now capella university is an online accredited college that can help you get that all mportant degree (masters in business, information technology, education, health, human services, public safety, and psychology or bachelors in business, information technology, health, and public safety) while working full time.
Also, as I said before in the title Capella University is looking for career minded people to work for them.
*Capella University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA), http://www.ncahlc.org.
This company has good education and career opportunities. The headquarters to this school is in Minneapolis, MN. It is committed to providing high-caliber academic excellence and pursuing balanced business growth. So check it out.

Nanowrimo Day 2
Well, I did another headlong rush (for me) to 6101 words. I had to stop and catch my breath and take an afternoon nap. I was amazed at some of the younger writers. There was one college student who had done 21,000 words by about 4 p.m. today. That is writing 10,000 words per day.
She admitted that she had gone through the night. I just don't have that amount of energy. So you will see me plodding towards the finish line in turtle-like fashion.
But, not only will I be plodding, but I will be having fun. (meeting new people... characters.)

Lover Revealed
By J.R. Ward

Butch O'Neil used to be a cop and is human. He is now with the Brotherhood, but the one day he fights the Lessers by himself, he finds himself strapped down and tortured. Marissa, a vampire, and Butch love each other. If Marissa gives into this love, then she might kill Butch--a pretty tangle.

Announcement: Nanowrimo
So today has been a very successful day for me for nanowrimo. I have accomplished more than I expected. For my success today, I have to thank Lynn Harris at Romancing Paradise. She gave me some really good inspiration because she is doing "sweating with sven." Also, my husband for making sure that I was not going to read during my writing time.
So thank you. Thank you. Reaching for my flowers. I can't wait to get started tomorrow. (waggling my eyebrows).

Seduction/Surrender
By Amanda Quick (JAK)
ISBN: 0-553-38386-8
These two novels bound in one book are classic Quick writing. Seduction is about a match between Julian, Earl of Ravenwood, with a quick temper and country-bred Sophy Dorring. Julian thinks that Sophy will be easily led by a husband because she does not have that city polish. Little does he know what kind of adventures he will have with his soon-to-be wife.
Surrender is about Victoria Huntington, a wealthy debutante, and Lucas Colebrook, the new Earl of Stonevale and fortune-hunter. He would do anything to put his new inheritance to rights.
Excellent plots, characters, and fun all around. I'll give this 2-1 4.5 stars.

Wegener's Granulomatosis
What is Wegener's granulomatosis?
Wegener's granulomatosis is a uncommon type of inflammation of small arteries and veins (vasculitis). It classically involves inflammation of the arteries that supply blood to the tissues of the lungs, the nasal passages (sinuses), and the kidneys. "Incomplete" forms exist that only involve one of these areas. When both lungs and kidneys are affected, the condition is sometimes referred to as generalized Wegener's granulomatosis. When only the lungs are involved, the condition is sometimes referred to as limited Wegener's granulomatosis.
Wegener's granulomatosis usually affects young or middle-aged adults. Although it is uncommon in children, it can affect people at any age. The cause of Wegener's granulomatosis is not known.
What are symptoms of Wegener's granulomatosis?
Symptoms of Wegener's granulomatosis include fatigue, weight loss, fevers, shortness of breath, bloody sputum, joint pains, and sinus inflammation (sinusitis). Nasal ulcerations and even blood nasal discharge can occur. Other areas of the body that can also become inflamed in patients with Wegener's granulomatosis include the eyes, the nerves (neuropathy), the middle ear (otitis media) and the skin resulting in skin nodules or ulcers.
The rest of this article is here.
Just a note: Even though this disease is rare in children, it can still happen in children. I know patients as young as 9 years old getting this disease. Unfortunately, if you think your child has the disease, you (the parents) will have to press and push... use the Vasculitis Foundation consultants... because some doctors just have a block when it comes to this disease and children.
Also, don't believe everything you read online about this disease. Even though this disease cannot be cured as of yet, patients can live long careful lives with treatment. Also, this disease normally affects sinuses, lungs, and kidneys; however, this disease has been known to affect the brain, skin, eyes, and other organs. It is a systemic disease (meaning it can affect whereever there are small blood vessels).
For more information about Wegener's Granulomatosis, go to the sidebar in this blog. There are two places that can give you good infomation: The Vasulitis Foundation and John Hopkins Vasculitis Center.
